Dear Parents, Parishioners, and Benefactors,
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the
Jubilee festivities in June! We had a great time! A
huge thank you to the Centennial Committee [Margaret
& Leon Plante (chairpersons), John & Karla Ruder, Kelli Hansen,
Maria Simon, Sr. Rosalyn Juenemann, Jerry & Karen Casey, Michele
Garvert, Carol Hansen, Fr. Galen Long, and myself]
for their hard work planning, organizing, and
finalizing the events! It was a tremendous success!
I've written a few memories of my own concerning the weekend.
These appear in the "Jubilee News" section below. I hope
you enjoy reading the summary.
If anyone
loaned us photos and/or memorabilia for the centennial, it can
be picked up at the school office on Tuesday and Friday mornings
this summer.
Thanks again for your support. God bless you. Have a
wonderful summer.
Mrs. Parker
PS--In the process of transferring our alumni database from
one computer to another, some data was lost, so it is not as
complete as we'd like it to be. If you know of anyone who
should have been included in our mailings and did not receive an
invitation to the jubilee celebration, please extend our apologies for us!
Or call the school and give us the information so we can add
them to our database for future mailings. We appreciate your help in spreading
the word!

NEWS...
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION...JUNE 11-12-13, 2010
The
centennial jubilee celebration began with a wine and cheese
social on Friday, June 11, at the SHGS cafeteria. Classroom
tours were given so graduates and guests could peek into the
rooms and recall their grade school years with former classmates
and teachers. One comment often heard was, “I remember the hall
being much longer and the rooms being much bigger. I guess it’s
all a matter of perspective…as one grows up, the world grows
smaller.” The evening reception was hosted by SHGS alum Melanie
Fisher Nelson and her helpers Anita Toelkes (also an SHGS alum),
her mother Mary Ann Fisher, and Sr. Rosalyn Juenemann (a former
SHGS teacher). One of the oldest alumni attending the
celebration was Bill Brin, who with his wife made the trip from
Hollister, CA, accompanied by their daughter who lives in Utah.
They took in all the festivities and enjoyed every minute as
they recalled good and bad times growing up in the area.
Saturday, June 12, was an eventful day which included a parade
downtown as part of the town’s annual Paradise Creek
Celebration. The theme of the school’s float was Generations
of Faith † Love † Education † Success and featured
present-day students as well as alumni representing several
generations. Parents of present-day students also walked
alongside the float distributing water bottles labeled with the
SHGS jubilee logo to the crowd lining the street.
A
dance hosted by alumni John Ruder and Bill McCune and their
wives for the alumni and school families was held Saturday
evening at the KofC Hall; music was provided by CW Productions.
Sunday, June 13, began with a downpour, but parishioners and
guests still crowded into Sacred Heart Church to attend the
10:30am Jubilee Mass. When principal Carol Parker invited all
SHGS alumni and present-day students to join in the entrance
procession, the packed church pews were quickly emptied as SHGS
students of all ages and locales preceded Fr. Galen Long up the
aisle to bring 100 lighted candles to the front of the church to
be placed in front of a statue of the Sacred Heart. SHGS alumni
and students performed the ministries of service at the Mass.
By
the time Mass was ended the sun was shining and God smiled upon
the celebration as parishioners, school families, and alumni
were each presented a red or white balloon and asked to go to
the playground where the outline of a huge heart had been drawn
for a balloon launch to commemorate the celebration.
Following the magnificent balloon launch, a near-capacity crowd
assembled in the school cafeteria for a lunch of grilled
hamburgers and hot dogs, pasta salads and cole slaw, chips,
lemonade and iced tea, and of course birthday cake! Special
guests of honor were the Sisters of St. Joseph without whom SHGS
would never have survived the past 100 years. The CSJ’s came to
the parish as teaching nuns in 1911 and continued their teaching
ministry at SHGS till 2002. Although no nuns are presently
teaching in the school, Sr. Rosie Dwyer is a Foster Grandparent
serving as a teacher’s aide. In attendance were: Srs. Francis
Margaret Otter, Mary Esther Otter, Rita Ann Mazanec, Miriam
Vaughn, and Sr. Vivian Boucher.

SHGS wish list
SHGS
ended the year with an
enrollment of 84 students in grades K-6 and preschool. We increased enrollment by 27 students from last year's official count!
So we are in need of more materials to enhance the learning
of our students. What a great problem to have!
To
house the "overflow" SHGS acquired a
2-room portable classroom building. This building sits to the east of
the main building and north of the convent. We house 5th & 6th
grade classes in this building, plus 4th grade math and science classes.
To make the building comfortable and utilize it to its fullest extent, we
purchased the following items: automatic water dispensers, bulletin boards,
white boards, 6-ft tables, and shelving units. We are also in the
process of installing building-to-building connections to the main internet and PA
systems. Donations to help defray the cost of these
expenses would be greatly appreciated.
Now that
all mandated Kansas Assessments must be administered online
we need a computer lab to house enough computers to administer tests
to 8-12 students at one time. New laptops or netbooks that could be
easily stored in a locked cabinet would be so nice!
Additionally,
the following items would be great to have for the individual
classrooms: +Cricket stencil cutter for all classrooms to
use @$300
+24-inch
laminating machine @$500
+32-inch Flat
Screen HD-TV for library
+Daily
Science Activities for lower grades @$30
+File Folder
Reports for lower grades @$22
+Seasonal
bulletin board kits for lower grades @$30
+Bead
Sequencing Set for primary grades @$25
+Textured
Touch & Trace Number Set for primary grades @$16
+Tangram
Basic Kit for primary grades @$24
+Idea Book
for primary grades @$15
+Cuisenaire
Rod Alphabet Book for primary grades @$10
+Basic Wooden
Geo Solids for primary grades @$9
Anyone wishing to
make a donation toward the school wish list or classroom funds may send a
check to the school c/o our principal Carol Parker at Sacred Heart Grade
School, 300 N. Washington, PO Box 408, Plainville, KS 67663. Thanks in
advance for your generous support of our students and staff!
